youtube response to a statement claiming that depression was a medical illness:
"Unfortunately, that explanation is only partially true. It is a well know FACT that the symptom of "chemical imbalance in the brain" just does not exist. It was a very effective "advertising slogan." There is no medical test that can measure a process or physical damage and determine a functional disability in the structure of the brain that leads to "depression." Depression is not a physical, or medical problem except in a very few cases where there is obvious physical damage to the brain. "Depression" is a social phenomenon that is almost entirely environmental and social. You can NEVER "cure" depression with drugs. You just "hide" depression with drugs because nothing was really "broken" to begin with.
The reason that the "chemical imbalance in the brain" model is so popular, is that it blames the victim and allows the "power brokers" in society to continue their games with little social accountability. In my opinion, depression is a disease of society that happens to manifest itself in individual people (as silly as that sounds). To REALLY cure depression we need to change society itself."
currently, one sixth of the entire population of the USA is taking doctor prescribed "medicine" for depression.
