In playing music, you are either right or wrong. There is no middle ground. You play the right note, or you don't. You play the correct rhythm, or you don't. You play in tune or you don't. There is no middle ground. If you wish to perform beautifully, you must be absolutely correct. There is no compromise in music performance.

It is difficult to appreciate the concept, but it is akin to martial arts and the idea expressed in the Tao Teh Ching that the master butcher's ax never needs sharpening. There is a point where the meat just falls away from the bone and you hardly have to work at all. Similarly in music there is a "sweet spot" that exists in time and space and when you place the note in that "sweet spot" the result will have the maximum effect. The goal is to place all the notes you play as close to their own "sweet spot" and then the results are magic and you can [almost] transport people in time and space.
